WV Grantmakers to Benefit from Staff Leadership

Contacts: Judy Sjostedt, (304) 428-4438

Paul DoughertyWest Virginia Grantmakers Association announces its new preisdent,Paul Dougherty, to take the organization to a next phase of growth to benefit all of West Virginia.

West Virginia Grantmakers Association is a regional association of grantmakers building infrastructure and support for West Virginia philanthropy and enhancing charitable giving. There are 28 such regional associations in the U.S., such as the Ohio Grantmakers Forum, Michigan Council on Foundations, and Indiana Grantmakers Alliance. The Association will provide information, training, and leadership to promote best practices among Mountainstate grantmakers and work to raise the public profile of philanthropic efforts within the state.

West Virginia Grantmakers Association offers giving institutions a place to convene, express ideas, and collaborate on charitable giving needs and programs in the state. West Virginia's 25 community foundations and leaders from an estimated 400 private foundations, corporate foundations, and corporate giving programs are invited to join.

A recent study underway by the Nonprofit Capacity Focus Team of the West Virginia Vision Shared effort indicates that increased attention is needed to improving West Virginia's overall giving climate to better support the state's nonprofit organizations. The Association is a forum for the state's grantmakers to focus their attention on this issue, among others. Building a strong network among those who give will ultimately benefit the nonprofit organizations that put those gifts to work in local communities across the state.

West Virginia Grantmakers Association was started in 1995 through an all-volunteer effort. In 2001, it hired part-time staff and began providing services specifically to increase the capacity of the state's community foundations through support from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, Verizon Foundation, and Appalachian Regional Commission.
