WEST VIRGINIA AT A GLANCE
Special thanks to the Benedum Foundation for the data and information presented on this page.
In West Virginia, 1 in 12 people works for a nonprofit organization. That's more than those who work for the state government, or in the construction or mining industries. In 1999, the most recent year for which figures are available, employees of nonprofit organizations earned $1.4 billion in wages.

A Johns Hopkins University study says that, although West Virginia's nonprofit sector is a major economic force, "regrettably, this point is not well understood by policy makers, the press, or the public at large."

Learn more about the state's economic development plan,
West Virginia: A Vision Shared! and how it includes nonprofit
organizations, including community foundations.

Research shows that up to 70% of economic growth is attributable to entrepreneurial activity. Currently, West Virginia ranks low in that area: A recent corporate for enterprise development report rated the state 49th in "Entrepreneurial Energy," but multiple organizations within the state are working to change that.

In America, 54.8% of adults age 25 and older have no education beyond high school. In all of Appalachia, the figure is 66.7%, and, in West Virginia, it is 70.6%.
